Are you considering getting a pet hamster for you or your children? It’s actually a great idea, especially if you have kids. Why? Because there is hardly a better way to teach children about life, responsibility and work than with a pet. And if you teach your kids about those things, you are giving them a gift that they will carry all their days, and pass onto their children as well.

Hamsters Make Great Pets

Hamsters are smart, funny and adorable. What more could you want in a pet? And they are easy to care for once you get the basics down. Did you have a hamster as a child and are now ready to get one for your own child? Good for you. Let your child go with you to pick out the hamster that he or she wants.

Syrian hamsters are the ones most people know about. They are also called teddy bear or golden hamsters. They are solitary, so if you want your child to have only one hamster, this is the way to go. They can be nippy but that is only if they are not used to being handled. When you get your hamster make sure your child plays with him and gets to know him. Hamsters shouldn’t be ignored, just like other pets. When they are properly socialized it will make for a happy household.

Give Him The Right Cage

Modular cages are fun to look at, but they are hard to clean and ventilate. It really is best to just get an old-fashioned wired hamster cage that is big enough for your new pet to romp around in. Remember that hamsters love to build cozy nests, too. Put in enough aspen shavings so he can build his nest and still have shavings to walk on.

A wire cage will have a plastic base, which makes it easy to clean. You can pull the plastic out to clean it and wipe down the metal at the same time. It is much easier to maintain than an aquarium.

About Having A Pet Hamster

Having a pet hamster is fun. There’s work involved, but it isn’t laborious, and it’s an excellent way to teach children about responsibility. Let your child pick out a special name for the hamster you get. And make sure they have ample time to spend together, so they can get to know one another and fall in love.
