Have you ever wondered why there is an aquarium at your local dentist’s office? It has been scientifically proven that having a fish as a pet reduces a person’s stress level. A person can sit there hypnotized at the colorful array of fish swimming through their creatively designed habitat; soon patients seem to forget the reason why they were sitting in the waiting room to begin with.
Fish can be the easiest pet you own, from having a small little goldfish you won at the carnival in a bowl by your bed side, to a daily routine of checking and testing the water levels of your 500 gallon salt water tank displayed as a centerpiece. Like any other pet you have to first decide on the amount of time and level of commitment you are willing to devote to your new aquatic pet.

There are a wide variety of species of fish ranging from fresh water to salt water and both containing hundreds of colors, sizes and shapes. Fish are also very easy to obtain, you don?t have to go to a special breeder or pet store anymore, and some local store chains contain a variety of fish tanks in the pet section of their store.

Fish can also be very affordable, allowing you to get a small tank and a few fish with the same amount of money you would spend on dinner at a fast-food drive thru.
Fish are a great alternative for anyone who suffers from pet allergies or dander induced asthma. Every child should have the experience of owning a pet; fish make it easier for those who cannot clearly breathe around dogs and cats due to shedding or pet dander on furniture and carpet.
Fish can also be a great first pet for a child, teaching him or her important lessons in responsibility. You can create an aquarium that is age appropriate for your child. A younger child might only need to feed their goldfish once a day, while older children can learn from maintaining the proper temperature and concentration levels of their elaborate underground saltwater wonderland.
Having a pet fish has come a long way from when the Romans first kept them under their guests’ bed. Fish aquariums have now been made into coffee tables, implanted into walls, and even toilets. Don’t miss out on the wonder and beauty of owning a pet fish.
